[UPDATED] Following the announcement of 2017 being the Year of Sports in Barbados, the Caribbean island is proud to announce that it will host the inaugural Barbados Cycling Festival this Autumn.
Taking place between September 5th and September 10th, the Bajan cycling community will come together to welcome road and MTB cycling enthusiasts and adventurous holiday goers from the UK and beyond.
The five-day event has been designed for cyclists of all abilities to discover Barbados from an unparalleled perspective. The first four days will offer visitors the opportunity to get to know the various parishes of Barbados on both road and mountain bikes.
‘No road will be left undiscovered’ is the attitude that the Barbados Cycling Festival will adopt as it takes visitors on many unforgettable journeys.
“At long last, we are proud to show off the island’s superb cycling routes,” says Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc’s (BTMI) UK Director, Cheryl Carter. “We have a thriving road cycling and mountain biking community here on Barbados with stunning MTB trails, especially along the east coast of the island.”
The round-the-island main road sportive will be held on the final day. It will offer cyclists the opportunity to sign up to one of two ‘round the island’ courses. The brave, the bold and the daring will attempt the ‘gold course’, traversing the coastal route of the island (95km). Alternatively, those who would rather take part in a less challenging day will opt to ride the ‘silver course’ (65km).
Presenting the unmatched opportunity to see the island from a viewpoint that only a handful before have experienced, the gold course will start in Bridgetown and will take competitors anti-clockwise around the perimeter of the whole island. It will expose cyclists to dramatic coastal views of Cattlewash, the lush greenery of St John’s parish, and often-missed small towns and villages along the coast and inland. The silver course may be just more than half the size of the ‘gold course’, but it has been carefully plotted so that cyclists will still experience stunning scenic views at every turn.
Guests from all corners of the globe will be welcomed onto the island in a true Bajan fashion. Those who choose not to take part in the cycling will not miss out on the celebration spirit as music and entertainment will take place post race on the beach front.
The Barbados Cycling Festival aims to showcase Barbados to the ever-increasing UK audience who love road cycling and mountain biking.
The Easternmost island in the Caribbean, Barbados has not just a beauty like no other place on earth, but also the stern foundations in becoming a destination for sport. Famed for its pristine beaches and brilliant blue skies, the idyllic island is breathtaking. Adding to this is the wonderful party spirit on the island and the easy-going nature of its people. Barbados is proud to own the Year of Sport.
